About Jinci Temple

Jinci Temple, located in Jinci Town, Jinyuan District, Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province, was originally named Jinwang Shrine and initially Tang Shuyu Shrine. It was built to commemorate Tang Shuyu, the founding vassal of the State of Jin (later posthumously awarded the title of King Jin), and his mother Yi Jiang.

As China's earliest surviving, largest-scale, and longest-standing imperial sacrificial garden and ancestral shrine of the State of Jin, Jinci Temple is a concentrated carrier of ancient Chinese architectural art. It is a unique example of intact architectural types and chronological sequences from the Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing dynasties to the Republic of China, with its attached colored sculptures, murals, and steles all recognized as national treasures. Integrating ancient Chinese sacrificial architecture, gardens, sculptures, murals, and epigraphic art, it is a precious historical and cultural heritage known as the "Museum of Ancient Chinese Architecture." It also serves as a comprehensive carrier of the historical context of the Three Jin Regions, embodying the cultural inheritance of Jin culture dating back to the enfeoffment of the State of Tang in the Western Zhou Dynasty and the prosperity of the Tang Dynasty. Additionally, it is the ancestral home of the Wang, Zhang, Tang, and Jin surnames worldwide. Among its highlights, the Everflowing Spring, the Maidens' Sculptures, and the Zhou Cypress are hailed as the "Three Wonders of Jinci."

Jinci Temple was listed as one of the first batch of National Key Cultural Relic Protection Units by the State Council in March 1961. In 2001, Jinci Temple Museum was rated as one of the first national AAAA-level tourist attractions by the China National Tourism Administration. In May 2009, it was approved as a National Second-Class Museum by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage. In December 2024, the Jinci-Tianlong Mountain Scenic Area was officially designated as a national AAAAA-level tourist attraction.

On August 23, 2025, three national honorary steles—"National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit," "National First-Class Museum," and "National AAAAA-Level Tourist Attraction"—were unveiled at the Waterfall Square of Jinci Temple Museum in Taiyuan, Shanxi. Jinci thus became one of the 12 units in China holding all three titles simultaneously.
